Jerusalem is central to the idea of the return of the Jewish people to its ancient homeland.
The modern political movement called “Zionism” is an attempt to create a political program for a 2,000 year old yearning, namely, to return to the mountain of the Holy Temple. In the 4th century, the Roman Emperor Julian gave Jews permission to rebuild the Temple but he was cut down by an assassin before the project could be completed. To this day, on the 9th day of the Hebrew month of Av, Jews around the world fast in mourning for the destruction of the Temple. It is said that Napoleon (1769-1821) went by a Parisian synagogue once and heard wailing inside. When he asked what was going on, he was told that the congregation was crying over the destruction of the Temple. “When did this happen,” he asked? “2,000 years ago,” came the reply. His answer: “a people who mourn the destruction of a Temple that was destroyed so long ago, will see it built again”.
I know the trope: “Jerusalem is holy to Judaism, Christianity and Islam”. But, I’m sorry, that’s only partially true. Jerusalem is only holy to Christianity and Islam because it is holy to Judaism. Jerusalem is holy to Christians because Jesus was a Jew who went on pilgrimage to the Holy Temple on the Passover during which he was crucified. Jerusalem is holy to Islam because Muhammad is said to have gone on an out of body nighttime journey on his steed, al-Buraq, from Mount Zion. Muslims believe that he flew to heaven from this spot because it was the site of the Temple of the God of Israel. Judaism, Christianity and Islam did not focus on Jerusalem independently of each other. Jerusalem is part of the Christian and Islamic consciousness because it once was the capital of Judea in the land of Israel.
The Arabic name of Jerusalem is "Al Qods", the word "Qods" derrive from the Hebrew word "Qodesh" = Holy.
Under Mohammed , the Qiblah was first oriented for 2 years to Jerusalem , after Mohammed arrival in Medina 622 CE ( Medina = Hebrew name for Yathrib) believing the Jews will welcome him as a prophet , they did not! He change the Qiblah from Jerusalem to Mecca and massacre the Jewish tribes of Medina.
