Hebron needs no introduction. Abraham spent many years living in Hebron and later buried his wife, Sarah, there.
For anyone versed in the Bible, Hebron needs no introduction. Abraham spent many years living in Hebron and later buried his wife, Sarah, there. Caleb received Hebron as a special inheritance from Joshua, in fulfillment of Moses’ promise, and King David established his first capital in Hebron. Significantly, it is one of the few places in Israel that the Bible tells us was purchased by Jews – the Machpela cave, purchased by Abraham to bury Sarah. Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, and Jacob and Leah are all buried here.
Jewish presence in Hebron, however, extends well beyond the Biblical period. There were Jewish communities in Hebron for centuries. From the 16th century until 1929, when rampaging Arabs massacred 70 Hebron Jews and drove the survivors from the city, there has been an uninterrupted, flourishing Jewish community in Hebron.
There are more than 8,000 Jews living in Kiryat Arba-Hebron today. Despite the fact that most of ancient Hebron itself has been relinquished to the Palestinian Authority, with only the small areas of Jewish settlement still in Israeli hands, Jewish life there is flourishing. The brave pioneers who returned to the ancient city of Kiryat Arba-Hebron have extraordinary faith in God and trust that theirs is truly a sacred mission – to create a permanent, strong, vibrant community in the city of the Patriarchs.
The Land of Judah Museum was established in 2002. The museum’s mission is to educate Israel’s citizens about Judea's rich Biblical and archeological history. The museum currently has on display hundreds of archeological artifacts – testimony to the Jewish people’s heritage in the Land of Judah and the city of the forefathers.
The museum provides programs to create a living connection between the youth of Israel and its ancient heritage. This past year alone, 3,812 children, from 167 classes between kindergarten and high school, participated in this unique educational program! Teachers, discharged soldiers and tourists from abroad also avail themselves of activities at the museum. This past year 6,440 people—adults as well as children—participated in the museum’s educational programs. Last year the Land of Judah Museum incorporated a project called “Upwards to Hebron”, which brought thousands of visitors from all over the country; for some, the only chance to be exposed to Israel’s holy sites and to reconnect with their rich ethnic roots.
Each person is charged a token fee for participating, so as not to burden the parents of large families with heavy costs. A good part of the maintenance costs and ongoing expenses are covered by revenue from the modest fees paid by visiting groups and by municipality participation. But there are the additional costs of trained guides and quality workshops. So many schools have approached the museum for a chance to partake in this wonderful program that more guides must be hired and more equipment purchased, including computers and audio visual aids.
